ABOL is designed as a long-term initiative and organized in a decentralized way crosslinking Austrian institutions involved in biodiversity research. In various projects, DNA barcodes are generated. Projects are assigned to taxonomic clusters, in which experts of a particular organism group tightly cooperate.

ituated%20in%20the%20Eastern%20section%20of%20the%20European%20Alps%2C%20Austria%20encompasses%20a%20great%20diversity%20of%20different%20habitat%20types%2C%20ranging%20from%20alpine%20to%20lowland%20Pannonian%20ecosystems%2C%20and%20a%20correspondingly%20high%20level%20of%20species%20diversity%2C%20some%20of%20which%20has%20been%20addressed%20in%20various%20DNA%20barcoding%20projects.%20Here%2C%20we%20report%20a%20DNA%20barcode%20library%20of%20all%20the%20476%20species%20of%20Geometridae%20%28Lepidoptera%29%20that%20have%20been%20recorded%20in%20Austria.%20As%20far%20as%20possible%2C%20species%20were%20sampled%20from%20different%20Austrian%20regions%20in%20order%20to%20capture%20intraspecific%20genetic%20variation.%20In%20total%2C%202500%20DNA%20barcode%20sequences%2C%20representing%20438%20species%2C%20were%20generated%20in%20this%20study.%20For%20complete%20coverage%20of%20Austrian%20geometrid%20species%20in%20the%20subsequent%20analyses%2C%20the%20dataset%20was%20supplemented%20with%20DNA%20barcodes%20from%20specimens%20of%20non-Austrian%20origin.%20Species%20delimitations%20by%20ASAP%2C%20BIN%20and%20bPTP%20methods%20yielded%20465%2C%20510%20and%20948%20molecular%20operational%20taxonomic%20units%2C%20respectively.%20Congruency%20of%20BIN%20and%20ASAP%20partitions%20with%20morphospecies%20assignments%20was%20reasonably%20high%20%2885%25%20of%20morphospecies%20in%20unique%20partitions%29%2C%20whereas%20bPTP%20appeared%20to%20overestimate%20the%20number%20of%20taxonomic%20units.%20The%20study%20furthermore%20identified%20taxonomically%20relevant%20cases%20of%20morphospecies%20splitting%20and%20sharing%20in%20the%20molecular%20partitions.%20We%20conclude%20that%20DNA%20barcoding%20and%20sequence%20analysis%20revealed%20a%20high%20potential%20for%20accurate%20DNA-based%20identification%20of%20the%20Austrian%20Geometridae%20species.%20Additionally%2C%20the%20study%20provides%20an%20updated%20checklist%20of%20the%20geometrid%20moths%20of%20Austria.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222024-03-11%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1371%5C%2Fjournal.pone.0298025%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221932-6203%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fjournals.plos.org%5C%2Fplosone%5C%2Farticle%3Fid%3D10.1371%5C%2Fjournal.pone.0298025%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22KAB3XLVM%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222024-03-28T09%3A10%3A25Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
