Survey of nocturnal butterflies of the Koblacher Ried (south Rhein valley)
Koblacher Ried (c) G. Friebe
The majority of the native lepidoptera fauna is nocturnal. Many species are micromoths of unknown local distribution and / or deficient data on biology (e.g. flight time, habitat claims) which hinders the assessment of their extinction risk within Vorarlberg. Even in the “well-studied” valley floor still needs research. The reed areas in Koblach provide one of the largest contiguous low-moor bogs in the Rhine valley. However, these extensively cultivated areas are subject to an increasing demand for use (such as bicycle routes, intensification of agriculture, etc.). The present project aims at establishing a better knowledge about species diversity in these highly endangered habitats. DNA barcoding is used as an aid to identify difficult taxa.
